Over time I learned about installations and different window film types.
One other thing happened. I started to learn what effect a certain type of film would have on a room or home. This allowed me to start recommending film types to clients. The natural flow on was the ability to go and do the quotes.
During the winter months, the amount of work diminished quite severely. My financial commitments did not. I had to find another solution. As a contractor, I was not restricted from carrying out other work, so I started to look for my own work.
My friend, for whom I contracted, did take offence and fired me on the spot, once he found out. Thanks a lot, great friend!
There I was, broke, no job, car payments, Visa card payments, rent, power and little luxuries, such as food and clothing ..........
What to do? Well, after the initial shock and couple of days, I had a job in a local bakery. In hindsight, the best job to have. Nice and warm. Early starts, early finishes. Working weekends, with a couple of days off during the week.
Baking in the mornings, tinting in the afternoons. That was the idea. Reality was somewhat different. After all, how would people know about me?
Here is what I did..... and what you can do, if you have a vision.... do one thing every for your business. Just one thing!
A word of advice: You need to take it past the planning and into the action stage. I have seen people getting ready for the start of their business, always waiting for the right conditions. Just one more thing, then another..... What happened to their great business ideas? Well, it was easier to go back to a job. Definition of job: Just Off Broke. Will everything be right in your business straight away? Mine certainly was not, did it change? You bet! I made it better, little by little.
My message today? Burn your bridges, get off your butt and stop making excuses!
No matter what your business, with the right attitude and product, you can be a success.
