I've been in the window tinting industry for some time now. I started my own business after working as contractor for another guy. When he spat the dummy and left me out in the cold, I felt a little hurt (the clean version).
I reached rock bottom, but was determined to get ahead again. Within a short time, my business was bigger than the other's. Still working by myself, I had to get help. I found there are two types of people around. People that share and people that don't. Because our industry is such a small one, you know most players after a short time.
Getting to know my distributor was very helpful, but after they started to set up opposition businesses up, that relationship soured quickly. By that time, my business was large enough to import my own film. Having good relationships with my competitors, I started selling film to them. It was a win-win situation. Who lost? My former distributor.
Take it a few years down the track, I still sell film to my competitors and a growing number of installers around the country. We have established a network, where every participant benefits. Every customer benefits too.
The key to making it work?
Choose your people carefully! ...... don't push ...... and be patient!
