Over the last few months our company was asked to help out another window tinter with quotes and installations. The reason for this was his inability to provide the service himself. He was based out of Auckland, but advertised heavily in this area. He had some other people let him down, so he said, and wanted to ensure his customers were getting looked after.
This man had some great ideas and plans for expansion. He shared his ideas with us and even suggested we should join forces. Our company also has plans, which involve some rather lengthy contracts and considerable time and costs.
We were a bit concerned about the execution of some of the ideas, which we mentioned to him. Upon us questioning his lack of preparation, he said that it all costs too much.
But........ he had this arrangement with a large carpet retailer, where he offers a 10-year carpet fade warranty, which he would personally guarantee. Neither the carpet retailer, nor the window film manufacturer or distributor would be held responsible for any claims.
We repeatedly discouraged him from this guarantee, because the idea was good enough without this unrealistic warranty. Unfortunately, this man's focus was not in the details, nor in enlisting professional or industry advice.
Now let me assure you, window tinting does effectively prolong the life of carpets, leather, wood and interior furnishings. But as window tinters, we have no control over the qualities of anything but our films, so it is unwise to offer any guarantee of fade resistance on these products.
Today, this man is a bankrupt, his phone's cut off and owing suppliers money. How many customers are now with a worthless warranty? Are we to blame for his demise? I don't think so, the wheels started to fall off some time ago.
Moral of the story: Deal with a member of Master Tinters, we are not making unsubstantiated claims; and a personal guarantee is only as good as the man behind it. The largest Yellow Pages ads do not always represent stability. Ask questions, a solid business does not mind answering them.
PS: I don't like people losing money or their business. We can handle competition and welcome it. What I don't like is when a customer is being mislead.
