When I first got into this business, I knew nothing about window tinting. Working part time to help a friend on weekends, that's how I started. Once I got the hang of it, I worked as contractor, just tinting. Over time, I learned to do quotes and eventually started my own business.

I always had a bigger picture in mind, so it was not long, before I considered joining the WFAANZ, Window Film Association of Australia & New Zealand. In fact, my opinion of the Association was very bad; I felt it was badly run and offered very little. So I made my feelings clear to the President. He said to me:"And that is why you should join."

In a quirky way, this made sense and I joined. For the first couple of years, I just attended the AGM's, read the newsletters and so on.

Next, I joined the committee. Our association was run by the distributors. They called the shots. Just making sure to protect their market. Those days, the NZ market was a choice of two distributors.

I started to know my competitors and seen some of their work. Just like any trade, which needs no formal training and is cheap to start, you find all sorts of characters. So I thought that the good ones are members of the window film association. Yes they are, but so are many of the shady ones. The ones that tint cars illegally, for instance.

So, how do you know you are dealing with a competent tinter? Truth is, you don't. And when things have gone bad, it's too late and your hassles start.

Members needed at least 2 years experience, have high quality standards of workmanship and a commitment to look after their clients.
